The play by A.R. Gurney is best described as a 'dramedy', both comedy and drama combine to make this extremely interesting script come to life. It is composed of five separate subplots which take place simultaneously in one room of a suburban motor lodge outside of Boston during the late afternoon and early evening of a spring day in the last 1970's.
The play is about ten ordinary people who find themselves at the wayside of their lives, wondering which turn to take. Their difficulties and conflicts are commonplace, but to give dimension and resonance to their situations their stories are presented side by side, and in some cases, simultaneously, on stage. In this way the playwright has made the ordinary seem somehow extraordinary.
