First People's Pots
Join Mohawk artist Marleen Murphy of Millside Ceramics in person for First People's Pots — For a intimate, hands-on cultural experience rooted in story, tradition, and connection to the land. Hosted in her personal studio, this small-group gathering invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and create with intention.
Marleen will share her personal journey as a indigenous, offering insight to her connection to clay, culture, ans community. Guided by her teaching, you'll learn to shape your own Mohawk/style pinch pot using traditional techniques, before taking part in the rare opportunity to cure your piece over a opening fire.
Along the way, you'll be invited to paint a handmade ceramic ornament representing one of the 3 Mohawk clans, while learning about the meaning and significance of each. The experience also includes a traditional tobacco offering and an introduction to Mohawk practice of gratitude and reciprocity.
Grounded in sensory connection and story telling, guest are encouraged to arrive with open minds, a willingness to be present and reflect on a time when clay was gathered by hand and crafted with purpose. The experience includes a shared traditional meal, offering space for conversation, reflection, and connection.
