About Historical Society Seeks New Board Directors

Article from The Historical Society newsletter, The Outlook
"The Historical Society’s Board of Directors"
By Gary Nicoll

With the start of the new year, my thoughts have turned to our Society’s new year this coming March. We will hold our election for the Board of Directors at the March Public Presentation. Prior to that the Board reviews its list of candidates to serve on the Board of Directors. Connie Carson, a highly valued director passed away this last fall and we expect the possible retirement of one more director. Our past president, Richard Hughes, is also looking to “pass the torch” to new people after serving for many years, including twelve years as president. He will be carrying on as Editor/Publisher of the Society’s newsletter, Outlook.

It takes time to grow accustomed to the workings of the Board and the Society. Being a Board member is not an onerous job or responsibility. We meet for a 1½-hour meeting eleven times a year on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. These meetings plan out our presentations, and deal with expenditure approvals, and discussions of the Society’s plans for projects, like publishing books, planning a bus tour or planning a cemetery tour. Most members have an assigned job that has occasional demands on their time, The executive is busy on a monthly basis.

We have a very healthy membership and an extremely successful and highly regarded Historical Society. I am inviting you to consider volunteering to serve on the Board. It is the group of new volunteers from about 5 years ago that deepened the strength of the Board and has allowed the Society to change its graphics and its website and restart bus tours after the pandemic lockdown and start annual cemetery tours. We have also continued the highly successful Monthly Public Presentations at Maranatha. The moving on of time, means we have to keep adding to our Board membership. We have a good number of past Board members who still contribute well to the workings of the Society and we value them very much. That longer service will be there for those of us who are serving on the Board, but still we know we need to plan for our replacements to add freshness, new ideas and dynamism. You can speak to myself or any of our board members about joining.
