About Mapping Contours: Encaustic work by Susan Fisher

Susan Fisher is an accomplished encaustic artist who has taught lessons across Ontario since the 1980s. She has shown her work extensively in Toronto, Peterborough, Alberta, and overseas in Japan. Her work combines the encaustic medium with photo images and other collage materials such as metal screening, canvas, and paper. These layers add dynamic and unique elements to each composition. Her most recent work created for this show focuses on topographical maps, layering fragments of each map within layers of encaustic and oil stick. This adds a fluid element to what would otherwise be a fixed set of grid lines. Fisher’s work invites the viewer to follow the map contours to embark on an imaginary journey. Each map fragment is derived from areas within with Fisher once worked and taught: in remote Northern regions of Quebec and Alberta. These newer contour-focused works are accompanied by a curated selection of older works.

Please join us for an opening reception with the artist in attendance from 1-4 pm on Saturday, November 18, at Melt Studio + Gallery in Picton.

The show will run from November 16- December 10, 2023. The gallery is open to the public Thursday-Sunday from 11-5.
