About Masterpiece in Progress: Rug Hooking Workshop - Lavender Sunset

Discover the joy of rug hooking in this hands-on, multi-day workshop at the Museum of Lennox and Addington, led by fibre artist Denise Finn of Soulful Skeins Rug Hooking.

Perfect for beginners, this welcoming and creative workshop invites participants to slow down, learn a new skill, and create something beautiful along the way. Over six hours of guided instruction, participants will design and complete a 6” x 6” hooked rug, learning the foundational techniques of this traditional fibre art. Instruction will cover the tools of the trade and how to use them, pulling loops and maintaining proper tension, the importance of outlining, blending colours and textures of wool, and creating movement within a design. Participants will also learn finishing techniques, including binding and steaming/blocking their completed piece.

All tools and materials are provided, including a pattern on backing material, frame or hoop, rug hook, and a selection of wool fibres—everything needed to complete the project without a frame. The focus of the workshop is simple: learn something new, enjoy the process, and have fun while creating!

Artist Bio:

My journey into fibre arts began at a young age, taught and mentored by my mother. From the age of 8 or 10 into adulthood I received instruction in knitting, sewing, embroidery and quilting. In 2020 I discovered rug hooking. I greatly enjoy the tactile nature of working with 100% natural fibres. My medium consists of wool yarn, wool roving and wool cloth. My materials are pulled through a primitive linen backing with a small hook one loop at a time. I find the process of pulling loops very meditative and relaxing. When I couple these responses with my love of colour and texture I feel great joy in creating my art.
