ALICE, DARLING presumes that relationships can be hard to decipher from a distance. But Alice’s two friends believe they can see through the happy, cheerful smokescreen. Alice is interpreting the ugly reality of emotional abuse as demonstrations of love. There are hints she understands her own situation while avoiding that realization. A joyful cottage weekend planned for Muskoka, arranged by Alice’s friends, has more than wine on the menu.
