About The Wayside Motor Inn
The play is set in a suburban motel room in the present and is comprised of five separate subplots which take place simultaneously in the one room.
Unfolding before us are the stories of ten ordinary people who find themselves at the wayside of their lives, wondering which turn to take. Their difficulties and conflicts are commonplace, but it is in their presentation, playing off each problem, in tandem and in counterpoint, which makes the ordinary become
extraordinary.
The Wayside Motor Inn has many comic moments but it also qualifies as a dramatic piece as each of the conflicts Gurney’s characters confront builds to a dramatic conclusion in the second act.
